Cullberg is a national and international contemporary repertoire dance company in Sweden, continuously co-creating to make cutting edge dance relevant for the many. Together with choreographers from all over the world, we are exploring ideas on how dance can be defined, produced and presented. Those explorations are the pillars of a company that is constantly in motion at the heart of the international arena. Always challenging, always relevant. During 2019-2022, Cullberg works exclusively with three associated artists: Alma Söderberg, Deborah Hay and Jefta van Dinther. Cullberg was founded by Birgit Cullberg in 1967 and has been a part of Riksteatern, The Swedish National Touring Theatre, from the start.

Riksteatern is an idea-based cultural organization, established in 1933, that presents, promotes and produces touring performing arts. Sustainability is important for Riksteatern and we work ongoing with questions regarding equality, diversity and climate change and its impact.

Cullberg is now looking for our new Artistic Director. As the Artistic Director, you have a shared leadership for Cullberg, together with the Managing Director. The Artistic Director leads the development process and artistic vision of the company. You are responsible for the repertoire and its process. An important part of the job is to be in dialogue with the dancers on their individual as well as collective artistic growth and development. Cullberg is a part of Riksteatern's Dance Department and you are a member of the Dance Department Management team.

Objectives and tasks

As Cullberg’s Artistic Director you will be asked to develop an artistic vision rooted in the times we are living in:

  • Our work emerges from the times we are living in, as part of the socio-political environment including equality, diversity, and sustainability.
  • Our work is to contribute to the development of dance as an art form. An art form that changes all the time.
  • For us, the making of a work is a collaborative effort between an artistic team, a technical team, and a production team, all equally valued and acknowledged.

As the Artistic Director you will be asked to develop the company’s presence and audience outreach locally in Stockholm and in Sweden, as well as continue developing the international touring. The core of Cullberg’s work is a consolidation of national and international touring.

Cullberg strives to work with dancers possessing strong contemporary techniques and practices, who are creative in developing and proposing movement material and who are versatile in various styles with an ability to work within different contexts. Integral to our artistic vision is combining and blending the effects of visual, emotional and technical styles and methodologies. With respect to this, we continue to assemble a company and a supporting staff that is diverse in terms of age, gender, skin colour, geographical background and sexual orientation.

Important for the role

We are looking for someone who has experience from a leadership role in the field of arts and with achievements such as good and lasting results. We believe you have a strong network within the dance community. We also believe you are committed and interested in ethical leadership. You have a deep and current knowledge in contemporary dance, in all its forms. You also have a firm ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.

As a leader you have integrity and a collective, supporting and coaching way of working. You have an interest in facilitating and developing ideas. To enthuse, motivate, develop and involve colleagues comes naturally to you, and you are able to create team spirit and a good working environment. You have excellent communicative skills and an interest in communicating about the activities and processes of the company both internally as well as externally. You have great feedback and listening skills. As a person, you are curious and risk taking. You have the ability to see opportunities and solve problems. You have knowledge and interest in both cultural and political issues.
