OPEN CALL: SPACE AND PLACE
MASKINHUSET IN GRÄNGESBERG, SWEDEN
CHOREOGRAPHIC AND SPATIAL RESIDENCY
23RD-29TH MAY AND 1ST-14TH AUGUST, 2022

For a long time Grängesberg was home to Sweden’s third largest iron ore mine. From the driver’s
chair in Maskinhuset (the ‘machine house’) the controls that transported ore were operated until
1989. Now the space is open to choreographers and dancers who want to work in a unique
space with a rich history.

This monumental building offers both challenges and opportunities. The huge windows open up
the room in several directions, and the natural light that flows in changes the character of the
room as the shadows lengthen throughout the day. A residency here is ideal for
those with an interest in open spaces combined with a sensitive spirit and a perceptive attitude.

The Space and Place Maskinhuset dance residency is a collaboration between Riksteatern
Dalarna, Dalateatern, Riksteatern, Ludvika Theater Association and Ludvika municipality,
together with support from Region Dalarna.

Who can apply?
Choreographers and dancers, preferably in collaboration with other artists and creatives.

Schedule
Three weeks in total, divided into an introductory week 23rd-29th May and two weeks between 1st-14th August, 2022.

Public meetings

During the second period of the residency you will have the opportunity to meet young and adult
audiences. These meetings are pre-planned by you and the organizers. Please briefly describe how you would like to meet the audience.

Practical information
During your residency you’ll stay and work in Grängesberg in southern Dalarna. Maskinhuset will be your primary workspace. Please bear in mind that in May Maskinhuset can be cold, so warm clothes are needed. Accommodation is provided at Disponentparken’s Bed and Breakfast.

The Residency includes

  • Honorary of SEK 150,000 + VAT (Self employed is a requirement)
  • Budget for production materials and costs are determined in consultation with the project group based on a pre-agreed budget and residency planning
  • Free accommodation and breakfast provided at Disponentparken in Grängesberg
  • Primary workspace - Maskinhuset
